Discover the Heart of Show Low Arizona – Your 1st Stop In the White Mountains

Nestled in the picturesque White Mountains of Arizona, Show Low is a charming town brimming with history, character, and a sense of community that captivates visitors and residents alike. From its fascinating origins to its vibrant present, Show Low offers a unique blend of the past and present, making it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the Southwest.

A Tale of Two Ranchers, A Tale Of Show Low Arizona

The history of Show Low Arizona is an intriguing one, rooted in the story of two ranchers, Corydon E. Cooley and Marion Clark. In 1876, Cooley and Clark found themselves at an impasse, both laying claim to a sprawling 100,000-acre tract of land at the northwest edge of the White Mountains. The land, rich and expansive, was too vast to support two families, and neither man was willing to buy the other out.

To resolve the dispute, Cooley and Clark turned to a game of Seven Up, a card game that would forever change the course of the town’s history. The game was played at the kitchen table of Cooley’s two-story home, which stood atop a hill south of where a church now marks the spot. As the game drew to a close, Cooley needed just one point to win.

With nothing left to lose, Clark, holding a three, challenged Cooley with the words, “show low and you win the ranch.” Cooley drew the Deuce of Clubs, securing his victory and renaming the ranch Show Low. The main street through town was aptly named the Deuce of Clubs, a testament to this historic game of chance.

The Spirit of Community: The Truck Stop

Fast forward to more recent history, and you’ll find the spirit of community alive and well in Show Low. One of the town’s beloved landmarks was The Truck Stop, a vibrant marketplace that once served as a hub for rural America’s mom-and-pop food vendors, artists, tiny shops, and live music. Though it closed in 2021, The Truck Stop left an indelible mark on those who experienced its final summer, including my wife and me.

During its heyday, The Truck Stop was a 3-acre oasis of creativity and camaraderie. Classic vehicles, now covered in snow and tumbleweeds, once buzzed with life and activity. Even though it’s no longer in operation, I encourage you to stop by and take a stroll through this nostalgic “museum.” You’ll discover some of the most unique ideas in repurposing, showcasing the ingenuity and spirit of the community.

For instance, there was an Airstream trailer transformed into the “Beerstream,” serving up local brews in a cozy, retro setting. A yellow school bus was converted into an eat-in diner, with its seats removed and repurposed for outside dining on pickup beds. A surplus prison bus became a quirky dining space, adorned with a farm-to-table themed mural painted by local artist Jonny Antoni. An old cattle truck was reimagined as a stage where bands once entertained families, and Thursday nights were reserved for “Open Mic Nite with Josh Mottley.” Even the bathrooms were a marvel of creativity, housed in an old carnival trailer converted into a five-stall restroom.

The vision behind The Truck Stop was the brainchild of Mike Meixler and his wife Kelley, affectionately known as the “dream grower.” Their goal was simple yet profound: to give people who couldn’t afford a shop of their own a place to start. This inclusive and generous spirit resonated deeply with everyone who visited, and although we were saddened to see it close, we remain grateful for the memories and friendships we made there.

Turn of the Card Community Center

In the heart of Show Low Arizona lies another gem that exemplifies the town’s commitment to community and care: the Turn of the Card Community Center. This center is not just a place where people gather; it’s a hub of warmth, camaraderie, and service.

The origins of the Turn of the Card Community Center date back to 1983 when Gertrude Mae “Trudy” Bartlett began a humble mission to serve sack lunches to seniors in need from her own kitchen. Rallying friends and neighbors who shared her compassion, Trudy’s efforts grew into what is now a cornerstone of the community. Her spirit of generosity lives on through the center’s dedicated members, guided by the mantra “Leave no one hungry in the White Mountains.”

Gerty’s Kitchen, named in honor of Trudy, opens its doors every weekday from 7 am to 10 am. Here, you can find not just food, but the essence of community. The community center thrives on the dedication of volunteers, and the need is ever-growing, particularly for drivers who can deliver meals to homebound seniors. These deliveries are lifelines, bringing not only food but also connection and care to those who might otherwise be forgotten.
